Basilicata region hailed as an undiscovered jewel
18 Sept 2008
The Basilicata region of Italy has been hailed as one of the "undiscovered jewels of Italy" by a top website.
E-Blackboard.com says the region allows visitors to "step back in time", offering both "impressive scenery and landscapes".
It is divided into two provinces - Matera and Potenza - and is situated in the so-called "instep of the Italian boot" between Apulia and Calabria.
Famous film director Francis Ford Coppola still has family ties in the region, which e-Blackboard.com says he refers to as "still preserved, still authentic and still unpolluted".
According to Italy World Club, the Basilicata region is massively under-populated, with agriculture being the main source of income for many people.
Furthermore, history lovers may be interested to know that the area boasts Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera, the area's designated world heritage site.
